But let’s be honest... For many of us, dessert is the best part of a meal, and we can’t think of a better ambassador to represent all that is right with respect to soul food than sweet potato pie.
While a lot of people realize that sweet potato pie is a long-established dessert in the United States, they may not realize that its origins date all the way back to the 18th century (even earlier if one traces its roots back to West Africa, and before that, Britain). Slaves that were brought to America replaced the original British-based pumpkin pie recipes with this sweet, starchy root vegetable readily available
across the South. They began making the pies to serve at large gatherings and family celebrations, thereby affording these individuals a well-deserved release from the extraordinarily tough lives they lived day by day. Once slavery ended, sweet potato pie remained an important part of the African American family tradition.
It proved so popular it ultimately became mainstream and, in the latter part of the 19th century, Fannie Farmer featured a recipe in her renowned Boston Cooking-School Cook Book (1896). Indeed, sweet potato pie has been enjoyed by millions ever since, proving that amazing food transcends all.
